Heat-Treated vs. Standard Pallets: What’s the Difference

When choosing the right pallet for your business, it’s important to understand the difference
between heat-treated pallets and standard (non-heat-treated) pallets. While they may look
nearly identical, each serves a different purpose depending on where your products are going
and your shipping requirements.

What Are Heat-Treated Pallets?

Heat-treated pallets are wooden pallets that have been heated to a core temperature of at least
56°C (132.8°F) for a minimum of 30 minutes. This process eliminates insects, larvae, and other
pests that could be transported through wood packaging

Once treated, qualifying pallets are stamped with the internationally recognized IPPC/ISPM 15
mark, indicating they meet the requirements for international shipping.

What Are Standard Pallets?

Standard pallets are wooden pallets that have not undergone the heat-treatment process. They
are ideal for most domestic shipments within the United States and are commonly used in
warehouses, manufacturing facilities, distribution centers, and retail operations.
For businesses shipping products only within the U.S., standard pallets are often the most
practical and cost-effective choice.

Which Pallet Should You Choose?

The right pallet depends on your shipping needs.
Choose heat-treated pallets if you:

  • Export products internationally.
  • Need to meet ISPM 15 shipping regulations.
  • Have customers who specifically require heat-treated wood packaging.
    Choose standard pallets if you:
  • Ship products only within the United States.
  • Want a reliable and economical shipping solution.
  • Don’t have export requirements.

Are Heat-Treated Pallets Stronger?

One common misconception is that heat-treated pallets are stronger than standard pallets. In
reality, the heat-treatment process is designed to eliminate pests—not to increase the pallet’s
strength. A pallet’s durability depends on factors such as the wood species, design, construction
quality, and intended load capacity.
